The New Latin phrase terra firma means “solid ground.” Among the synonyms for terra firma is Earth. Local business Terra Pro’s name originated from the entrepreneurs’ desire to describe their work, yet not limit themselves to a specific field.
Terra Pro offers a plethora of services from erosion control, excavating, and hydro seeding to hauling. “Everything we do here is about giving back to the environment,” says co-owner Jamie Woods. “Erosion control, planting grass, planting trees, treating ponds. We bring back structure and growth to the environment. It’s what our company does.”
Jamie and lifelong friend, Tyler McClendon, started Terra Pro in September 2014. In February 2018, Michelle Richburg became a partner with the duo just before a tragic accident took Tyler’s life in May. Jamie credits his late partner with being instrumental in laying the groundwork for the company. Jamie, Michelle, and the Terra Pro team honor Tyler by continuing the work of investing in the environment.
Terra Pro currently works with both state and local companies, including Drummond Company, Mays Mining, Nelson Brothers, and Lost Creek Clay and Mineral. His passion for the field is evident as Jamie describes his company’s role in Walker County. “It’s a lot easier to go to work every day when you enjoy what you do,” he shares.
Why open a business in Jasper? “Jasper is a tight-knit community,” says the 2000 Curry High School graduate. “Anybody in the town is willing to help you in this industry, from the city council to building committees. Jasper itself enjoys the growth and wants it. All the local businesses in this town work together,” Jamie shares.
Terra Pro lives up to its name by giving back to the terra firma with each job it completes. 78
