Local CrossFitters Competing in Alabaster

Most people think joining a gym means you work hard to lose weight and get in shape. But for Sally Greene, co-owner of CrossFit 205 gym in Jasper, joining her gym also means an opportunity for competition. And not just competition with the person jumping boxes or flipping tires next to you.Greene is like an excited mother, and she should be. She is sending eight of her gym athletes to the CrossFit Dirty South Games to compete against many other CrossFitters from across the state on August 4 in Alabaster.“The Garage Games, a subsidiary of CrossFit, gets with sponsors like CrossFit Alabaster and puts on these local competitions like Dirty South Games that are CrossFit sanctioned,” she said. “Our teams will be competing against each other as well as against other gyms.”Greene said CrossFit 205 is sponsoring two teams – CrossFit 205 Black and CrossFit 205 Blue. Each team consists of only four members – two men and two women.“I’ve never been to any of the Garage Games,” Greene said. “So I’m really excited about our athletes competing against other gyms. And, I have really high hopes for them.”According to Crossfitalabaster.com website, the teams will be expected to jump, slam, jerk, lift, sit-up, and run. The website gives the qualifying movements for both the RX and scaled divisions for both men and women.“The eight representing our gym are probably eight of our best athletes,” Greene said. “Each has strength in one or more of the areas of competition. For example, Brandy Lee is a great runner, so we are expecting good stuff from her in the 400 meter run.”The WODs (Work out of the Day) were announced last week, which gives the teams two weeks to prepare for the competition. Every team member will do all the events in a capped time limit.“Our teams are competing in a scaled division, and not an Rx or prescription division,” Greene said. “Those competing in the Rx division have probably already submitted their video to the CrossFit Games, a national competition that ESPN is airing now.”Greene said she is really hoping these eight competitors will get a taste of the Garage Games and want more.“I hope the teams do well and enjoy the Dirty South Games here so much they will want to go to Pensacola this year and compete again,” she said. “And maybe next year they will want to submit their entries to compete in the national CrossFit Games.”According to Greene, CrossFit is more than just a class. She said it is actually a sport.“If people want to lose weight, get in shape and feel good, that’s wonderful,” she said. “But people are competitive by nature, and eventually begin to ask, ‘What’s next?” Well this is what’s next – competition.”Greene said people run to lose weight and get in shape and then begin competing in 5ks and marathons. And CrossFit is no different because this work out program also offers competition at the next level.Daniel Evans, Alyssa Bunch, Jon Aaron, Megan Cervantes, Jake Seals, Stephanie Holcomb, Kyle Key and Brandy Lee will represent CrossFit 205 and compete August 4 at Veteran’s Park in Alabaster.
