by AlThursday, April 14National Crime Victims’ Rights Week Candlelight Vigil will be held at the CHS Activity Center in downtown Jasper. The music will begin at 5:00 PM and the service will begin at 6:00 PM. There will be several guest speakers including: Kim Goldman (Ron Goldman’s sister), victim representative Doug Gissendaner, District Attorney Bill Adair Jr., Father Keith Lewis, and Brother Patrick Morrison. Music will be provided by: CJ Harris, Christian Gann, Covered by Grace, First Methodist Church Children’s Choir, Jasper City Schools Kids Korale, and Bronson Hadder.Saturday, April 16Walker County Children’s Advocacy Center is hosting the 2nd Annual Safe Kids Expo in the courthouse square located in downtown Jasper from 2:00-6:00 PM. Families will be able to participate in activities including games, inflatables, food, prizes, and music. There will also be local law enforcement officers and first responders on site for children to meet. This is a free event.Saturday, April 16Path to the Foothills will begin at 6:00 PM in the courthouse square immediately following the Safe Kids Expo. This is the first of four shows in the summer concert series, which is a competition for local bands to compete to earn a spot in the Foothills Festival lineup. This year’s Foothills Festival will be September 9 and 10, 2016.Thursday, April 21Walker County Arts Alliance’s Tasting of the Arts will be held from 5:00-7:00 in the WCAA office, which is located in the First National Banks building in historic downtown Jasper. The event features a showcase of artwork from one or two spotlight artists, combined with food and beverages from local restaurants. This year’s event is hosted by the Relay for Life of Walker County-Jasper Event Leadership Committee. Tickets are $15 ages 13 and up and $5 ages 6-12. The proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society’s RFL team of Walker County.Saturday, April 22West Jasper Elementary School’s Garden Open House will be 9:00 AM-2:00 PM at the school. The community is invited to tour the garden to see what the students are growing, take home seeds and seedlings for their own garden, and to learn about different types of gardening, and register to win a garden gift basket.Saturday, April 23Relay for Life team of Capstone Rural Health will host a lip sync battle at Warehouse 319 from 5:00-9:00 pm. Warehouse 319 is located on 19th Street in downtown Jasper. The program encourages students to be active and be punctual to school, allowing them to eat breakfast and have social time. Simmons Elementary School’s Sunset at Simmons 5K will begin at 5:00 PM with a walk-up registration. Adult registration is $25 and 18 and under can register for $12; T-shirts will be provided while supplies last. The event will feature a 5K race, a fun run, and Spring Fling with rides, games, food, and drinks. The entrance fee to the carnival will be $5. All proceeds from the event will go to new facilities for the school. Saturday will begin at 8:00 AM with player check-in, a player meeting, and 2 rounds on a temporary urban course in downtown Jasper. There will be a raffle and live music. Sunday’s tournament, the “Birdie and the Beast,” will be held at The Eagle Disc Golf Course and North Jasper Park for an extra $25 for Amateurs and $40 for Pros. Each day will conclude with an award ceremony. The shows are a competition for local bands to compete for a spot in the Foothills Festival stage.Saturday, May 14Pregnancy Test and Resource Center’s cornhole tournament, “Toss for Life,” will be located at Scott Crump Toyota. Registration for the event will begin at 10:00 AM and the tournament will start at 12:00 PM. Online early registration is $35 per team and day of registration is $40 per team. There will be cash and prizes for the top teams! There will also be music, food, and a free kids’ zone. Each participant will get a free car cash. All proceeds benefit the PTRC.Saturday, May 21Ridez for a Reason Car Show will be held from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM. This year’s show will benefit Katie Adams, a student at Memorial Park who was diagnosed with a Stage 4 Wilms Tumor. The show will be held in downtown Jasper. To enter a car in the show, pay $20 at the door. There will be over 15 awards given, including Best Car and Katie’s Choice. The event will also include games such as Tug O’ War, Wheel Barrow Race, and Bean Bag Toss. There will be food and product vendors, a kid zone, door prizes, and a raffle.
