Friday, May 6West Jasper Elementary School’s Walking School Bus will meet at several different locations, allowing students to walk to school from those points. The program encourages students to be active and be punctual to school, allowing them to eat breakfast and have social time. The walking school bus is escorted by teachers, city council members, and the police. Simmons Elementary School’s Sunset at Simmons 5K will begin at 5:00 PM with a walk-up registration. Adult registration is $25 and 18 and under can register for $12; T-shirts will be provided while supplies last. The event will feature a 5K race, a fun run, and Spring Fling with rides, games, food, and drinks. The entrance fee to the carnival will be $5. All proceeds from the event will go to new facilities for the school. The firefighters will serve as the wait staff and will provide the entertainment. The 5k color run/walk/fun run is in memory of Ivy Redmill, and will benefit the Hope After Loss Organization (HALO), which provides help for those who experience the loss of a child. You can either pre-register at the Natatorium, or register the day of at 7:15 AM. Registration is $20.Saturday, May 7“Hats and Horses,” a Kentucky Derby Day benefit for EASI, will be hosted by Warehouse 3Nineteen in the Jasper Courthouse Square. The event activities will begin at 1:00 PM, with the derby starting at 5:34. Although there is no cover charge for the event, guests will be able to enjoy live music, contests, raffles, southern style cuisine, and refreshments including mint juleps, all guided by the event host, Bill Young. One lucky winner will take home a Yeti Cooler packed with Kentucky’s finest bourbon. All proceeds benefit EASI. The bike ride will start at restoration hall, then proceed to Green Top BBQ, River Café, Midnight Special, Warehouse 3Nineteen, and then back to Restoration Hall. The bands will play from 6:00 PM-12:00 AM. The line-up will feature The Junior Uptain Band, Road Trip Jones, Ernie N Denise McClinton, Smashley, and Fistful of Fifties. No coolers are allowed, but there will be concessions provided, and drinks can be purchased at Warehouse 3 Nineteen and Los Reyes. All proceeds will go to a scholarship to a student from each high school in Walker County.Saturday, May 14Path to the Foothills summer concert series will present the second out of five shows at 7:00 PM in the courthouse square of downtown Jasper. The shows are a competition for local bands to compete for a spot in the Foothills Festival stage.Saturday, May 14Pregnancy Test and Resource Center’s corn hole tournament, “Toss for Life,” will be located at Scott Crump Toyota. Registration for the event will begin at 10:00 AM and the tournament will start at 12:00 PM. Online early registration is $35 per team and day of registration is $40 per team. There will be cash and prizes for the top teams! There will also be music, food, and a free kids’ zone. Each participant will get a free car wash. All proceeds benefit the PTRC.Friday, May 13, Saturday, May 14, and Sunday, May 15Grip-N-Rip’s “Downtown Throw Down” disc golf tournament will be held in downtown Jasper.The tournament will begin Friday at 6:00 PM with early player check-in and a putting contest. Saturday will begin at 8:00 AM with player check-in, a player meeting, and 2 rounds on a temporary urban course in downtown Jasper. There will be a raffle and live music. Sunday’s tournament, the “Birdie and the Beast,” will be held at The Eagle Disc Golf Course and North Jasper Park for an extra $25 for Amateurs and $40 for Pros. Each day will conclude with an award ceremony. This year’s show will benefit Katie Adams, a student at Memorial Park who was diagnosed with a Stage 4 Wilms Tumor. The show will be held in downtown Jasper. To enter a car in the show, pay $20 at the door. There will be over 15 awards given, including Best Car and Katie’s Choice. The event will also include games such as Tug O’ War, Wheel Barrow Race, and Bean Bag Toss. There will be food and product vendors, a kid zone, door prizes, and a raffle.Saturday, May 28Jazz in the Park will be held from 6:00-9:00 PM at the Bankhead House and Heritage Center amphitheater. The event is sponsored by Walker Area Community Foundation, Walker County Arts Alliance, Honda of Jasper, and Hyundai of Jasper. Guests are invited to bring a lawn chair and a blanket and enjoy the musicians.
