Senate Majority Leader Greg Reed (R-Jasper) has announced additional state funding to make major improvements to the Walker County Courthouse. In all, $230,000 has been allocated to Walker County from the State of Alabama in the past three General Fund budgets for these improvements.
The additional funding is being used to improve security around the building with new cameras, security plans, and door locks as well as cosmetic improvements to the building itself.
“I am pleased that even with budget challenges because of COVID-19 we are able to provide this service to the people of Walker County,” Senator Reed said. “These are much needed improvements to the courthouse which will provide a much smoother operating and safer courthouse building for the people who work there as well as the people who utilize it every day. I would like to thank Governor Ivey for including these much need funds in the General Fund budget,” Reed said.
Walker County Commission Chairman Jerry Bishop was appreciative of the improvements to the courthouse.
“I would like to thank Senator Reed for his leadership on this matter,” Chairman Bishop said. “He has consistently been a champion for this project in Walker County and I believe his persistence on this issue has paid off in a way that will ultimately improve the function of the courthouse and the experience for those who use it.”
Walker County Circuit Judge Hoyt Elliot echoed Chairman Bishop.
“We appreciate the improvements that have been made to the Courthouse and we look forward to the additional changes with the funding provided by Senator Reed,” Judge Hoyt said.
These upgrades are either currently being worked on, or will be coming soon.
Greg Reed represents District 5 in the Alabama State Senate, which includes all or parts of Walker, Fayette, Winston, Tuscaloosa and Jefferson counties. He serves as the Senate Majority Leader.
