13 Questions with Kaysen Skalnik

1.What do you like most about living in Walker County?

This might be Question #1, but I had to save it for last because it’s hard to put into words what I love most about living here. Walker County is home. I moved away for a few years to go to college. When I graduated and it was time to decide where I wanted to go, I compared every place I considered to Walker County. It didn’t take me long to realize that none of those places were “home.” I love the people here and the strong sense of community you couldn’t find just anywhere else.

2. What skill would you like to master?

Cooking. I try, but so far it’s just not my thing.

3. What job would you be terrible at?

Either a chef (see above answer), or anything that would tie me to a desk.

4. What are you most likely to become famous for?

Probably for writing a children’s book. I teach first grade. Even though a huge part of that is teaching my students to read, my favorite thing to do is read to them. Maybe one day I’ll write a bestseller that becomes “one of the classics.”

5. If you could be cast for any movie role what would it be?

This one is hard, but I would say a detective in some kind of mystery movie.

6. You are on a deserted island and you have to do without either music, Internet, or books. Which one do you choose?

Music. Not because I don’t like music, but with the internet I would still be able to listen to it somehow. With time on my hands, I would want to read and an e-book just isn’t the same.

7. If you had to be another living person, who would you be?

Carrie Underwood. She’s famous, but she’s real. I admire how she uses her talents to

help and motivate people, and how she hasn’t allowed fame or the media to change who

she is.

8. Mountains or beach?

Beach. Any beach, anywhere.

9. Pancakes or waffles?

Waffles. I’m not really sure why, but they just taste better.

10. What is one thing that can instantly make your day better?

Talking to my grandparents.

11. What is one song you will never forget the lyrics to?

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.

12. What fashion trend did you buy into that you wish you hadn’t?

Wallabees. I remember thinking I HAD to have them in middle school. Looking back, they really weren’t all that cute and they definitely weren’t comfortable.

13. If you could speak to your younger self. What do you say?

Enjoy where you are right now. None of the things you’re worried about are going to matter a year, or even a week from now.
