This spring has been anything but typical, and that goes for the fish too. Warm weather was short-lived and often chased out with cool day temperatures and cold nights. This is confusing for the animal that depends on consistent weather for things like feeding and breeding.  

Fish on the bed have been strung out over a period of a couple months, and you might still find some large mouth on bed at the end of May. The rest of the fish don’t know whether to stay shallow or go for deeper water. One technique that is gaining momentum for this time of year is early morning sight fishing.  

Spots and striped bass can be found feeding on the surface, concentrating on large bait balls. Top water lures like the Strike King Sammy or other surface baits like the Jackal Chan Wake can pull some large spots out of the schools. As the day progresses, try crank baits, such as the String King 4-6xd and 6th sense baits cloud 9 series. C15 and C25 in the cloud 9 series should also work nicely. Look for long points and underwater islands to pull these by suspended bass. 78
