Bevill State Community College (BSCC) is excited to announce the appointment of Travis Garner as the new Head Coach of the Men’s Baseball Team. Garner started his college baseball career playing for Meridian Community College (MCC). He then went on to start for two years at the University of Alabama (UA) before signing a professional contract with the Kansas City Royals. Since 2008, Garner has worked as a high school baseball coach. The Bevill State Baseball Program is located on the College’s Fayette Campus.

“We had many good candidates apply for our head baseball coach position but in selecting Coach Garner, we feel we really landed an exciting blend of coaching and playing experience along with a commitment to excellence for our program. I believe our student-athletes, their families, and our communities are in for a great experience as Coach Garner maps the future of Bevill State Baseball. GO BEARS!” stated Bevill State Athletic Director Max Weaver.

While Coach Garner was at MCC, the baseball team won two conference championships. Garner was a member of the 2000 Junior College World Series Team, was named to All-Region 23 Team both seasons, and he still holds the MCC record for singles, stolen bases, and runs scored. During his time at UA, Garner played on two SEC Championship teams and participated in 2 NCAA Regional Tournaments. In 2003, Travis Garner was named All-SEC Outfielder. These experiences, along with the connection made by Garner during his time as a baseball player, will serve the Bevill State Baseball program well.

As Northridge High School’s Head Baseball Coach (2008-2013), Garner led the program to their best five-year stretch in program history, becoming the all-time winningest coach in school history. In 2012, he led this team to the first-ever area championship and GA post-season appearance. He was also named the 2012 West Alabama Athlete’s Foot Coach of the Year. During his tenure as Head Baseball Coach for Starkville High School (2013-2018), Garner led the baseball program to the first GA playoff appearance in 10 years. His record as Head Baseball Coach at Caledonia High School has demonstrated his continued strength as a coach with a record of 41-24 over 2 plus seasons. As a high school coach, Travis Garner has helped numerous players to college scholarships to play baseball, many of his players have been named all-star selections, and he has coached one MLB draft pick.

Coach Travis Garner said of the appointment, “I would like to thank Dr. Hagood and Dean Weaver for the opportunity to be the head baseball coach at Bevill State Community College. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be here. I am confident we will build a great program that will develop players and compete for championships. I look forward to working with the administration, community, and players to make this a program we can all be proud of. GO BEARS!”

Bevill State Community College President, Dr. Joel Hagood, said, “Coach Garner is a great fit for Bevill State. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our baseball program. Coach Garner has had an outstanding career thus far, helping lead each program he has been with to success. His passion and enthusiasm for the game of baseball are contagious. Our student-athletes are fortunate to have him as their head coach.”
