For the last three years, the concept of Nala’s Collection has matured in the heart of Jasper’s Zanala Hamm. Like a child in the womb, the idea of an inspirational T-shirt company came to full term in April 2020 amid the global pandemic and civil unrest. Nala’s Connection was a God-inspired response to the pain and disconnect that many people were experiencing globally, and each shirt was a beacon of hope in the middle of Covid-19’s gloom.

Zanala’s clothing line is an expression of her connection with the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus called “The Comforter” (John 14:16). As a young girl, Zanala would experience the tender embrace of the Spirit while doing praise dance at Rivers of Living Water United Methodist Church in Jasper. Now she wants the world to experience that comfort.

The T-shirts are designed to illuminate the world around the wearer by spreading a positive message. Each shirt boasts a phrase such as “God Over All,” “Choose Happiness,” and “Blessed & High Favored.” The phrases are printed on colorful, high-quality shirts to draw others’ gaze to the message.

Zanala’s first design, “God Over All,” was inspired by Ephesians 4:6: “One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”

“When I first came out with my “God Over All” shirt, I received so much support and people were so excited to wear the shirt,” Zanala says. “It meant so much to me that word was getting out that truly "God is over" all things and is here to help us through all of the problems, troubles, circumstances and difficulties of life. I’ve walked through my share of difficulties and life hasn’t been easy, but Jesus has saw me through it all.”

The 21-year-old designer graduated from Jasper High School in 2017 and subsequently obtained her associate’s degree in general business from Bevill State Community College. She is currently living in Tuscaloosa and attends the University of Alabama, where she is majoring in general business. She is set to graduate in 2021.

Zanala envisions her brand increasing in popularity in 2021 as she continues to expand the catalog to include hoodies, sweatshirts, hats, and many other apparel options. Her hope is for Nala’s Collection to provide more avenues for the light and comfort of the Spirit to reach the world.

“My calling in life is to uplift people,” Zanala says, “and the mission of my brand is to inspire, uplift, and encourage.” 78
