Bevill State To Offer ’Stem’ Dual Enrollment Opportunities For High School Students
Eligible high school students in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade can apply for a scholarship for STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) academic dual enrollment courses at Bevill State Community College. Previously, students had to take career technical courses to qualify for a dual enrollment scholarship. This scholarship is currently available for the 2021-22 academic year. The scholarships are funded by a Workforce Development grant from the Alabama Community College System (ACCS). The grant intends to generate interest in technical and trade careers to help address workforce shortages.
“With the current demand for math and science teachers and other STEM-related career fields, the chance to take this coursework for free while still in high school is a wonderful opportunity for students in the Bevill State service area,” stated Bevill State President, Dr. Joel Hagood.
Dual Enrollment scholarships will be available for STEM-related academic courses such as Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Physical Science, and Physics.
Students will need a 2.5 GPA to participate in STEM-related academic work. No waivers will be allowed.
The Dual Enrollment Scholarship application will re-open on July 26, 2021, and close on August 18, 2021. All Career Technical and STEM programs will re-open except for Welding, which is at full capacity on all campuses.
Students are eligible to apply for the scholarship for a maximum of two (2) courses per semester.
STEM-related academic courses do not have to be taken concurrently with an approved career technical course.
Students that receive scholarships for STEM-related academic courses are not required to be enrolled in a career and technical pathway or associates degree program to be eligible.
High School students can visit www.BSCC.edu/DualEnrollment for more information on Dual Enrollment and to find the application for the Dual Enrollment Scholarship.
