Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Reed Announces Over $5 Million in Road Projects for District 5

Senate President Pro Tem Greg Reed (R-Jasper) this week announced that over $5 million worth of infrastructure projects have been newly funded for residents of Senate District 5.

The funding was made possible through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program-II (ATRIP-II), a program created by the Rebuild Alabama Act. The Rebuild Alabama Act requires ATRIP-II to be an annual program setting aside a minimum of $30 million off the top of ALDOT’s share of new gas tax revenue for projects of local interest on the state highway system.

Reed detailed that three road projects totaling $5,406,878.13 in his district are being awarded ATRIP-II funds.

Jasper – Access Management Improvements on US-78 at the Intersection of Jones Dairy Road, Including Turn Lanes – Local Amount: $309,308.49 – State Match: $1,880,304.29 – Total: $2,189,612.78

Winston County – Resurface US-278 (SR-74) from SR-13 to SR-5, Including Planning to Increase Vertical Clearance on Westbound Lanes – Local Amount: $207,360.85 – State Match: $2,000,000.00 – Total: $2,207,360.85

Double Springs – Add Left Turn Lane and Extend Right Turn Lane on SR-33 at CR-24 Intersection; Add Acceleration Lane on CR-24 – Local Amount: $0.00 – State Match: $1,009,904.50 – Total: $1,009,904.50

Under the ATRIP-II program, there is no requirement that local governments put up matching funds to be eligible. The projects were selected by the ATRIP-II Committee created by the Rebuild Alabama Act. It is anticipated that several projects will be under contract during the 2022 fiscal year, however all projects are required to move forward within two years of the awarding of funds.

“This is great news for the people of Walker & Winston Counties,” said Rep. Tim Wadsworth (R-Arley.) “Having safe, reliable roads and bridges helps families live their daily lives across our area, and it also helps businesses and farmers thrive.  I will continue to support commonsense legislation that benefits the residents of House District 14.”

“I am excited to see three important road projects across Senate District 5 benefit from the latest round of ATRIP-II funds,” said Reed. “Having quality infrastructure is important for growing good-paying jobs for the hardworking families of our district, and I will continue to seek responsible ways to strengthen our communities. Thank you to Governor Kay Ivey, ALDOT, Representative Tim Wadsworth, and the local partners who made these projects possible. I look forward to many more projects across our district being funded through Rebuild Alabama in the months and years to come.”

The state has now awarded more than $100 million in state transportation funds under ATRIP-II since the program’s creation in 2019.

Alabama Senate District 5 covers all or parts of Walker, Winston, Fayette, Tuscaloosa, and Jefferson counties.
