Get to Know: Tim Barger

Tim Barger has been the compliance and audit officer at Bank of Walker County since 2011, but when he isn’t making sure the bank is complying with all the rules and regulations, he is downstairs at his home. He’s not crunching numbers on a calculator or doing paperwork, but rather tinkering with motorcycles from his workbench.

“I’m not great at it, but I’ve got a father-in-law who is, so he’s swift to help me out on a video call or text thread,” says Barger.

Admittedly, Tim has had motorcycles in the past and it’s a lot of fun, but now with Elijah, there’s not much time to get out. Barger and his wife, Christy, who owns Marilyn Sanders Performing Arts Center (MSPAC) in Jasper, have a rambunctious eight-year-old son named Elijah who keeps them busy and fills their family with joy.

Tim and Christy have been married for 22 years, and Tim can still recall the time he met his future wife. “We knew each other from school. I just ran into her one evening at Garfield’s shortly after they opened, and she was with some mutual friends that we have. I just stopped to talk to her and got her number,” says Tim.

Barger also grounds himself in his Christian faith. He and his family attend St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, located on the Trace in Jasper. “We’ve got a smaller congregation, but everyone there is family,” he says.

Barger also treasures the people within the brick-covered structure at Bank of Walker County.

“They’ve all been a blessing to me in so many ways. We are like an extended family,” he says.

Wherever he goes, Barger is encircled by love—whether it is by his work family, his church family, his own family, or his love of motorcycles—and you can bank on Barger to show you the same devotion if you ever encounter him. 78
