The Story of Us: Speedy Lunch

Speedy Lunch

This photo from 1935 of a young man in a white apron standing in the doorway of a local eatery may inspire a bit of déjà vu if you’re familiar with downtown Jasper.

Speedy Lunch was located on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 19th Street in Jasper across the street from the Burton Building. The young man in the doorway is Coke Lindsey and the gentleman sitting outside to the right is Charlie Gunter. If you look carefully, you can see Western Union Telegraph further down the street.

Speedy Lunch was owned by Cain O'Rear, and later, Frank Gunter. In the 1970s-80s, this spot was the location for a clothing store named David Lee’s, and later, Elegante’ Bakery.
