People’s Hospital
People’s Hospital
Construction for People’s Hospital began in 1934 at Birmingham Avenue and 19th St. in Jasper as a building project by the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA). It was completed by the Works Project Administration (WPA) in 1936, aided by President Roosevelt’s New Deal and support from Dr. Roy Hare. According to a 1935 article published in the Daily Mountain Eagle, the hospital was almost named "Roosevelt Hospital.” Ultimately, “Peoples Hospital" was chosen.
The building was renovated in 1964-1965 at a cost of $421,000. It has since been demolished. The site is now the location of the Jasper Civic Center.
