Darryl Strawberry to speak in Jasper this weekend

Darryl Strawberry, one of the most recognizable figures in baseball during his 17-year career, is scheduled to speak at the 413 Men’s Conference in Jasper this Saturday at Jasper High School.

The two-day conference on Friday night and Saturday will be hosted by Blanton Media Group (BMG), a company that publishes 78 Magazine and offers a variety of professional media services.

In addition to Strawberry’s appearance, Jeremiah Castille and Rev. Chette Williams, chaplains for The University of Alabama and Auburn University football teams, respectively, will speak at the conference.

Breakout groups purposed to give men the tools to become spiritual leaders and to help with a wide variety of men’s issues will be offered throughout the event, and participants may sign up for 3 sessions of their choice. The following is a list of breakout groups:

Breakout Groups

1. Addiction

Leader: John Steakley, Founder of Unbound Grace addiction recovery ministry

Ideal for: Those struggling with addiction or who have family members struggling with addiction.

2. Getting Bold for Christ

Leader: George Shamblin, The Center for Executive Leadership

Ideal for: Those who want to strengthen their witness and are looking for opportunities to share their faith.

3️. The Disciple Leader (Discipleship)

Leader: Bob Waldrep, Founder of Crosswinds Foundation for Faith and Culture and Warriors on Mission

Ideal for: Men who desire to become better leaders by understanding what it means to follow. Particular consideration will be given to the biblical analogy of the Christian life and the calling of the “good” soldier.

4️. Healthy Sexuality

Leader: Greg Oliver, Executive Director, Awaken Recovery

Ideal for: Men who want to experience their sexuality in a healthy way, free from porn and other unwanted/addictive behaviors; those who want to support friends who are struggling; and those who want to raise sons to have a healthy view of sexuality and relationships.

5️. Men Picking Up the S.L.A.C.K.

Leader: Brian Doyle, Executive Director, Global Baseball, former MLB Player for the New York Yankees, and published author

Ideal for: Men have been S.L.A.C.K. in our purpose for living. Slack in our relationships, leadership, being held accountable, character, and focus for the Kingdom of God. It is time to take up the S.L.A.C.K.!

6️. Bouncing Back from Trials

Leader: Greg Tinker, Pastor, Saragossa Church of the Nazarene

Ideal for: Those who have undergone intense trials in their life and are looking to refocus and reset.

7️. Finding Purpose

Leader: Cartwright Morris, Calvert & Associates, and Men Are Forged podcast

Ideal for: 20-and 30-year-olds looking for direction and purpose; parents of 20-and 30-year-olds looking for direction and purpose for their children.

8️. Dealing with Negative Emotions/Finding Your True Self

Leader: Adam Calvert, Calvert & Associates

Ideal for: Those struggling with identity and negative emotions like anger, anxiety, fear, etc.

9️. Being a Good Father

Leader: Kyle Cantrell, Big Oak Ranch

Ideal for: Those who are looking for tools to equip themselves to be better fathers.

10. Being a Good Husband

Leader: Scott Sessions, Pastor, Cullman First Church Of The Nazarene

Ideal for: Those looking for tips and resources for being a good husband; new husbands and newlyweds; those who are struggling in their marriage; those who are about to get married.

Those interested in attending the two-day conference may register on the website Eventbrite by searching for “413 Men’s Conference” or may register at the door. Cost is $109.

Registration and check-in for the conference begins at 4 p.m. on Friday at Carl Cannon Gymnasium at Jasper High School. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to sign up for breakout groups. The conference will begin at 6 p.m. and the Friday session will conclude around 9:15 p.m. The conference will pick back up on Saturday morning at 7:45 a.m.

Mr. Strawberry is set to speak at 1:25 p.m. on Saturday. and the conference will conclude around 2:45.

Two Strawberry baseball jerseys will be auctioned off for local charities, and a special offer to attend the  Strawberry session only has been extended to rising junior and senior boys in high school for only $10.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Team Focus, a charitable organization based out of Mobile for fatherless young men.
