30 Under 30: Gunter Wisdom

Teacher and Head Soccer Coach, Jasper High School

Jasper High School’s resident literary analyst and varsity soccer coach Gunter Wisdom thinks in perpetuity.

A Jasper native and 2012 graduate of Walker High School, Wisdom attended UAB and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature in 2016. Later, he received a master’s degree in English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher Education.

Gunter’s first break came as he assumed the role of AP English teacher at Cordova High School in 2017. Presented the opportunity to work for his alma mater and once more alongside friend and colleague Nicholas Sourvelis, Mr. Wisdom left Cordova in 2021 and has been a member of Jasper’s ELA department for just over two years.

Now he spends most of his time thinking.

Mr. Wisdom admits he is often uncomfortable with the implication of his answers; candor is a mirror in which he refuses to look, in fear that someone else may see his reflection, too. In other words, he struggles with being totally honest with his ideas because he wishes to maintain a particular image that sincerity could disrupt.

However, despite his overthinking, Gunter Wisdom is one of the kindest, most considerate, hard-working individuals that the students of Jasper and Cordova High School have ever had the pleasure to meet. Jasper couldn’t have asked for a better teacher, coach, and friend.

Thank you, Mr. Wisdom. 78
