Would you give a company or group of people everything if they invested almost half a million dollars into you? Such is the case for Mayson Slaughter.

Born and raised in Jasper, Mayson is the son of Mary and Steven Slaughter. His 11-year-old brother, KJ, completes his family.

Mayson grew up in church at New Hope Baptist Church in Carbon Hill and played sports all his life. A three-sport athlete, he played basketball, football, and baseball at Jasper High School, but says he liked football and baseball the best. He played third base for the Viking baseball team, and safety, outside linebacker, and running back for the football team.

He also served as a team captain during a season impacted by the Covid pandemic and won the prestigious Geddes Self Award—Jasper football’s highest honor.

“My senior year, I learned a lot. Not just about football but about people and how to lead,” Mayson says.

After graduating from JHS in May 2021, Mayson was accepted to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He says he chose to go into the Air Force to serve his country just like his father did.

Currently a sophomore, Mayson is studying to become an electrical engineer. Upon graduation, he will be a commissioned U.S. Air Force Training Officer.

“The fact that they believed in me, to put me at the school, is why I give them everything I have,” Mayson says. 78
