Inspiring Future Healthcare Leaders

I have had the privilege of dedicating my career to healthcare education. My journey began at the University of Alabama's Capstone College of Nursing, where I graduated in 1985. Today, I am an educator at Jasper High School, where I teach Health Science. I initiated this program in August 2005 at Walker High School, and it has since grown to become an integral part of Jasper High School's Career Technical Education.

Our mission is clear: to impart knowledge and skills that empower students to positively impact the healthcare field and deliver quality patient care. In our local community, healthcare is one of the largest employers, and the demand for healthcare services is continuously rising due to an aging population and technological advancements. Thus, the importance of starting health science education as early as high school cannot be overstated.

We are committed to inspiring and preparing our students to shape the future of the healthcare industry, which is projected to grow at a rate much faster than other occupations. These students are the pipeline for our future healthcare workforce, and our responsibility is to equip them with the tools they need to succeed.

Health Science students at Jasper begin their journey with an introductory course that exposes them to various healthcare careers. They acquire foundational skills that healthcare professionals universally require. We aim to enable students to graduate high school with credentials or certifications, making them employable as Patient Care Technicians or Pharmacy Technicians. This not only enhances their career prospects but also contributes to addressing the growing need for qualified healthcare professionals in our community.

We encourage our students to become part of our Student Organization, HOSA/Future Health Professionals. HOSA promotes career opportunities in healthcare, engages in community service, hosts state and international leadership competitions and conferences, sponsors scholarships for Health Science students, and enhances academic, technical, and leadership skills. This organization is a crucial platform for students to further their passion for healthcare and connect with like-minded individuals who share their goals.

Teaching Health Science is a calling that demands dedication, a passion for teaching, and a genuine commitment to helping students achieve their dreams in the medical field. I often remind my students to be cautious about what they wish for, as they may get it and more. Many years ago, while working in the hospital Emergency Department, I wished to start a Health Science Program at Walker High School. Now, here I am, truly blessed with a fulfilling career that allows me to nurture the healthcare leaders of tomorrow.

Health Science education in high school is more than just a course; it is a gateway to a promising future in the healthcare industry. As educators, we have the privilege and responsibility to inspire and equip our students to make a meaningful impact on the world of healthcare. Together, we can ensure that our community continues to benefit from a skilled and compassionate healthcare workforce. 78
