Soul of 78: Jacob Gates
Physical Therapist, TherapySouth
Service has been a guiding principle in Jacob Gates' life from a young age. As a dedicated physical therapist at TherapySouth, Jacob continues to uphold this core value in his work.
During his time as a student at Curry High School, Jacob experienced a dislocated shoulder in an athletic injury, and he reflects on this by saying, "Like most physical therapists, I once was a patient."
This initial encounter with the profession ignited his passion for sports medicine. While pursuing his education at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, he worked as a physical therapy clinic technician, assisting with patient care tasks. In this environment, he solidified his decision to pursue a career in physical therapy. After completing his studies at Samford, Jacob dedicated seven years to active military service as an Officer in the U.S. Army before obtaining his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri.
Following his graduation and extensive military travels, Jacob commenced his practice in Birmingham. However, he and his wife, Lauren, yearned to return to their hometown. The opportunity arose when Jacob was offered the position of Clinic Director at TherapySouth in Jasper in 2018.
"Therapy South is therapist-owned, and even our CEO is a physical therapist," Jacob remarks. "It's a full circle moment for me, as he was my boss when I worked as a tech."
Initially, the Jasper clinic consisted of just two employees - Jacob and an office manager. In just five years, it has expanded to include eight therapists. Despite the rapid growth, the Jasper staff shares a close-knit bond, embodying the core values of Jacob and TherapySouth and emphasizing the importance of family. This sense of family extends not only to the staff but also to the wider community.
Jacob notes, "I'm now treating former patients' family members, and our former patients return to us when they are in need."
As a Major in the U.S. Army Reserves, Jacob provides disciplined care on both the military and civilian fronts, influencing his leadership style and approach to practice, extending beyond the clinic's walls.
Jacob has made significant efforts to foster a culture that values community. Compassion lies at the heart of the care provided by Jacob Gates and his dedicated staff for the benefit of Jasper and the surrounding communities.
"We strive to be actively involved in the community, not just providing care when people walk through our doors," he states.
Service, family, compassion - these are the core values that adorn the metallic artwork on display within the TherapySouth facility and are manifested in the life of Jacob Gates, DPT. 78
