The walls of Bowen Chiropractic’s waiting room are lined with accolades. Certificates, diplomas, and awards cover the walls like an art gallery. Magazine clippings featuring Dr. Renee Bowen being named president of the state chiropractic board hang next to her certificate of service for the World Games. Across the room is Dr. Clara Bowen Underwood’s National Board certification, and nearby is Dr. Collin Bowen Louden’s diploma from chiropractic school. Frame after frame tells the story of decades of experience and dedication. But what patients remember more than the plaques and honors is the deep care, intentionality, and faith exhibited during every stage of their experience at Bowen Chiropractic.
Dr. Renee Bowen has been practicing chiropractic care for 41 years. After graduating from chiropractic school in 1984, she returned to her hometown of Jasper and began working with a local medical group. A few years later, she felt the Lord leading her to start her own practice. In 1986, Bowen Chiropractic officially opened its doors. As the practice grew, it soon outgrew its original space. Renee found a cozy brick house off Airport Road in Jasper, which she renovated and retrofitted into a welcoming office. That building remains home to Bowen Chiropractic today, a place where generations of patients have received care.
Bowen Chiropractic is a family business in every sense of the phrase. Clara, Renee’s oldest daughter, joined the practice in 2020 as a Doctor of Chiropractic. In 2023, her youngest daughter, Collin, followed suit, officially becoming the third Bowen chiropractor on staff. The same children who once ran through the office halls as toddlers now walk those halls as doctors, carrying forward the legacy of care they grew up watching their mother provide.
The practice has evolved over time, adapting to both patients’ needs and advancements in technology. Today, Bowen Chiropractic offers a wide variety of services, including lifestyle and nutritional counseling, fitness classes, laser therapy, dry needling, shockwave therapy, spinal decompression, and prenatal chiropractic care.
In recent years, Clara and Collin have developed a particular passion for prenatal and postnatal chiropractic services. They noticed a need in the community and pursued additional certifications to meet it. Expectant mothers often visit the clinic with pain caused by pregnancy. Gentle, specific adjustments can bring relief and provide both mother and baby with the best opportunity for a healthy pregnancy and smoother delivery. After birth, many mothers bring their infants to Bowen Chiropractic. Small adjustments can help address latching issues, colic, concerns abouthead shape, and digestive discomfort. Clara explains that even small tensions in a baby’s neck can grow into bigger problems later in life, but early care can prevent long-term pain.
The Bowen approach focuses on addressing the cause of pain rather than masking symptoms with temporary “quick fixes,” thereby encouraging the body’s natural ability to heal. With a 2,400-square-foot gym onsite, they offer both classes and one-on-one training sessions tailored to each patient’s needs and goals, in addition to the less invasive treatment methods they offer, like shockwave therapy and laser therapy. “If there is something else out there we can get that is the least invasive with the least amount of side effects, that’s what we want to do,” Renee said.
While many patients today look for instant solutions, the Bowens encourage patience and consistency. Healing takes time, and the practice emphasizes holistic care that works in harmony with the body. “God designed our bodies perfectly,” Clara said. “Our job as chiropractors, whether I am adjusting the spine or helping someone nutritionally or just with one of the other therapies, is to help aid the body’s role in getting back to health or back to neutral or back to perfect.”
Faith in Jesus Christ is infused into every aspect of Bowen Chiropractic. Each morning, the doctors pray together as they walk through the office, asking for wisdom and discernment. Their prayer is simple: “God, help us to hear what our patients are trying to say.”
Often, patients come in with vague descriptions: “Something’s wrong with me,” or “Something’s just not right.” The Bowens lean on their faith, asking for insight to help uncover what is truly going on and how best to treat it.
Renee recalls one instance where a patient came in complaining of neck and shoulder pain. Something about his symptoms didn’t sit right with her, and she urged him to visit his primary care physician. Weeks later, she received a call that he had five blockages in his heart and had been rushed into bypass surgery. “That was not Renee. That was God,” she said. “God gave me that understanding that what he was saying was not right, and we were able to get him in the right direction. Thank the Lord he is still with us.”
Every year since, that patient has returned to the office with a dozen donuts and a card to celebrate the anniversary of his surgery.
That story is just one example of the intentional care the Bowens provide. They are equally dedicated whether treating an infant with gentle adjustments, creating a nutrition plan for a middle-aged patient, or designing a fitness routine for a 99-year-old. Each treatment plan is personalized, thoughtful, and delivered with genuine compassion.
Another story Renee recalls is of a patient who called her in desperation. He was scheduled to deliver an important speech in a few days, but his back pain was so severe that he could hardly walk. Renee prayed with him and performed an adjustment. Days later, she sat in the audience as he crossed the stage pain-free. “He started walking out, and he got in front of the people around him, and I just started crying because I knew the Lord said, ‘That is what I have called you to do. To help these people so they can go do what they need to do,” she said.
During the workweek, Renee, Clara, and Collin can be found side by side, treating patients of all ages with skill, care, and intentionality. Their mission is clear: to listen closely, treat wisely, and provide holistic care grounded in both expertise and faith. For over four decades, Bowen Chiropractic has combined family values, medical expertise, and a deep reliance on God to serve the people of Walker County. And with the next generation carrying the torch, that mission is sure to continue for years to come. 78
