Horse Creek Golf Course in Dora, Alabama, has earned a reputation as a hidden gem throughout the Southeast. Boasting a course rating of 72.6 and a slope rating of 128, it's no surprise that golfers travel from near and far to experience its pristine greens. Beyond golf, a surprising attraction draws a different crowd: food enthusiasts.
Anthony Cordell is the friendly face behind the counter at the Horse Creek Snack Bar & Grill. For nearly two decades, Anthony has been serving snacks to hungry golfers. In recent years, however, he's taken the club's culinary offerings to new heights.
"We didn't have a kitchen for the longest time," Anthony recalls. "We used to cook hamburgers for tournaments on a small George Foreman grill, and it took us hours. But once we got a kitchen in the new building, I asked if I could start cooking instead of just selling prepackaged items."
That request turned out to be a game-changer for the local community.
"Now, we offer everything from breakfast sandwiches and hot dogs to egg salad and ham-and-cheese sandwiches," Anthony says.
Among the menu's highlights are two standout dishes: the mouthwatering cheeseburgers and the freshly made chicken salad.
"My personal favorite is the hamburger," Anthony shares with a grin. "But the chicken salad is by far our best seller."
Its popularity lies in its simplicity. Made with just five main ingredients grapes, celery, nuts, mayonnaise, and chicken it has become a must-try for regulars and newcomers alike.
"It might be simple to make," Anthony says, "but it has really taken off."
For Anthony, the secret to success is all in the details.
"Growing up, I watched my mama cook," he reminisces. "She taught me a lot, including to take pride in a clean kitchen. I'm proud to say we've had a health rating of 100 for four straight years. The lowest we've ever had is still high at 96."
That dedication to cleanliness and quality is evident to anyone who walks into the Horse Creek Snack Bar & Grill. Guests are welcomed with a smile in a clean, inviting space that overlooks the serene beauty of the golf course.
"We love to see new faces," Anthony says. "You don't have to be a member of the course or even a golfer. Just stop in, and we'll be happy to serve you." 78
