Two-time breast cancer survivor and former nurse Debra Parra is the sole owner and financial supervisor of Gabby's, a restaurant in the Parkland shopping center in Jasper, Alabama.
Debra was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998 and again in 2011 when she underwent a double mastectomy. Her life was profoundly altered by the diagnosis and the resulting nerve damage, which forced her to leave her nursing career.
During this challenging time, her cousin Mike approached her with an opportunity to purchase his restaurant, Hatt Hill BBQ & Grill. Thrilled by the prospect, Debra took over the establishment, which quickly became a second home due to its proximity to her residence and her existing connection with the regular patrons.
Debra managed Hatt Hill BBQ & Grill until late 2022 when a devastating fire destroyed the property. Undeterred, she acquired and reopened Gabby's, a beloved local eatery named after the husband of its previous owner, Linda Gomes. Under Debra's leadership, Gabby's has been revitalized and continues to thrive.
Debra rehired many former staff from Hatt Hill BBQ & Grill, fostering a sense of continuity and community. Her responsibilities as owner extend far beyond what many might expect. She reviews critical paperwork daily, pays bills, and ensures the restaurant's financial health. Once at Gabby's, she works alongside her team, taking on tasks ranging from ordering groceries and resolving staff or operational issues to helping in the kitchen, cleaning tables, and engaging with customers.
The transition from Hatt Hill BBQ & Grill to Gabby's was anything but easy, especially given the circumstances surrounding the fire. However, Debra credits her perseverance to the support of her husband and the warm reception she received from the community.
Her dedication to Gabby's, its employees, and its patrons is evident. Visitors to the restaurant are greeted by an inviting and charming atmosphere, a testament to the hard work Debra has poured into her business.
Debra remains deeply committed to Gabby's and its future. “I probably will never stop until I die. I'm not one to sit at home and rock in the rocking chair," she says.
As she looks ahead, Debra dreams of Gabby's continuing to grow as a place where good food and company come together. With hard work, a little grit, and the support of a community that feels like family, she has shown what's possible when you refuse to give up. 78
