Tim Barger’s banking career has been shaped by a willingness to learn, take on new challenges, and follow opportunities wherever they lead.
Today, Barger serves as both compliance officer and audit officer at the Bank of Walker County. This role draws on more than three decades of banking experience.
His career began in 1992, when a friend told him that First Federal Bank of Alabama—now Pinnacle Bank—was hiring in its collections department. At just 20 years old, Barger accepted a position as a Specialized Service Representative while still in college and pursuing a degree with a concentration in finance.
“Working an eight-to-five job while also going to school from six to ten at night was daunting,” Barger says, “but learning to navigate that in order to get my degree while making money was an accomplishment.”
As his career progressed, so did his understanding of the many moving parts of the banking industry.
In 1995, a contact at Regions Bank referred Barger to a position in the bank’s Large Currency Reporting department, where he gained experience in large-scale transaction reporting. From there, professional relationships opened doors to additional opportunities, allowing him to move between institutions while continuing to expand his knowledge and expertise.

Rather than viewing those moves as simply changing jobs, Barger saw each one as an opportunity to challenge himself and become a more well-rounded banker.
“You can climb your job ladder within any one company pretty quickly, but after that, you have to move to other areas in order to challenge yourself further and be the best at what you do,” he says.
Along the way, Barger also credits the people in his life with encouraging him to keep moving forward. He married his wife, Christy, in June 2000 and says she and their circle of friends became an important source of support throughout his career.
One of those connections eventually led him to the Bank of Walker County. Tony Sparks, then President of Bank of Walker County, contacted Barger and told him the bank was looking for a compliance officer. Barger accepted the position in July 2011 and has remained with the Bank of Walker County ever since, making it the longest tenure of his banking career.
The role also carries significant responsibility.

Banks operate under extensive state and federal regulations, and Barger helps ensure the Bank of Walker County remains in compliance with those requirements. Each year, he assesses risks across the bank’s operations, reviews processes in preparation for audits and regulatory examinations, and works with staff to address any areas that may require improvement.
For Barger, those reviews are not simply boxes to check. He views the process as an opportunity to strengthen the institution and prepare it for future success.
“We’ve always had an outstanding relationship with our regulators,” he says.
Although much of his work happens behind the scenes rather than across the desk from a customer, Barger still sees his role as part of the larger mission of community banking.
“The unity amongst staff, as well as the personal touch we provide with our customers, is ultimately what makes the job worth doing in my eyes,” he says.
After more than three decades in the industry, Barger’s career has taken him through numerous positions and institutions, each adding another layer to the expertise he now brings to Bank of Walker County. His work may not always be visible to customers, but it helps ensure the bank they rely on remains strong, accountable, and equipped to continue serving its community. 78
