Birmingham Gastroenterology Expands Access to Digestive Care with New Clinic Location in Jasper

Birmingham Gastroenterology is expanding access to digestive health services in Walker County with the opening of a new clinic location in Jasper. The clinic, located at 1009 7th Avenue, Jasper, AL 35501, within the Henderson & Walton Women’s Center, will be led by board-certified gastroenterologist Dr. William “Billy” Oelsner, who will provide comprehensive GI care to patients in the surrounding community.

In addition to seeing patients in clinic, Dr. Oelsner will perform procedures including colonoscopies and upper endoscopies in Jasper.

“We know there is a real need for expanded access to gastrointestinal care in Walker County,” said Dr. Oelsner. “I am excited to serve this community and provide high-quality, patient-centered care. Our goal is to make it easier for patients to get the care they need without having to travel far.”

Colon cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among adults younger than 50, making access to screening more important than ever.

For years, patients from Jasper and surrounding areas have traveled to Birmingham Gastroenterology’s locations in Homewood, Gardendale, and Cullman for care. The new Jasper clinic brings those services closer to home for patients across Walker County.

“Jasper is growing quickly, and opening a clinic here allows us to provide more convenient, timely access to GI care for patients in Walker County and the surrounding communities,” said Julianna Hallman, director of marketing at Birmingham Gastroenterology and a Jasper native. “We are proud to provide fast access to integrated, personalized care for this community, close to home,” Hallman added.

“My focus is helping patients catch issues early and manage conditions before they become more serious,” Dr. Oelsner added. “From colon cancer screenings to chronic digestive conditions, we’re here to provide the kind of care that improves long-term health and quality of life.”

Birmingham Gastroenterology is one of the largest gastroenterology practices serving patients across Alabama, with Jasper marking its 13th clinic location. The practice includes 16 physicians and 17 advanced practice providers, offering a full spectrum of digestive health services, including routine colon cancer screenings, esophageal disorders, acid reflux, IBS, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, liver disease, and more.

Dr. Oelsner joined Birmingham Gastroenterology in 2025. He was raised in Charleston, South Carolina, and graduated with honors from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed a prestigious research fellowship at Vanderbilt University, where he studied translational wound healing. He went on to complete a general surgery internship, internal medicine residency, and gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Chattanooga, where he was selected as Chief Fellow. His clinical interests include diet, healthcare disparities, and early-onset colorectal and pancreatic cancers.
