30 Under 30- Patrick Dutton

A Jasper native and member of one of the first graduating classes under the Jasper High School name, Patrick Dutton has long been drawn to both creativity and structure.
“In middle school and high school, I was in the band. It was pretty much my life,” Patrick says. “I was a big performer, and toward the end of high school I became interested in the compositional aspect of music and the mechanics of it.”
That interest in both expression and mechanics would continue to shape the path ahead. Patrick earned an undergraduate degree in music composition from The University of Alabama. After seeing the benefit of also earning a business degree while working with other music professionals who had done the same, and with a gentle push from his mom, Melissa, Patrick also enrolled in an accelerated MBA program at UA, becoming the school’s first composition major to complete the program.
“I was very excited about that, but it became difficult at points,” Patrick says. “Trying to register for classes and ask questions was no small feat since no other composition majors had done it before and I had no roadmap.”
Patrick’s willingness to move forward without a blueprint seems to define more than his academic path. Today, he works as a Business Management Analyst with defense contractor Northrop Grumman in North Alabama, but his commitment to Walker County remains one of the clearest expressions of who he is.
While in college, his involvement with UA’s Blackburn Institute reignited a passion for civic engagement and literacy. Rather than letting that conviction remain abstract, Patrick turned it into action. He founded the Carl Elliott Institute, a partnership between Bevill State Community College, The Walker College Foundation, and the Walker Area Community Foundation, with the goal of developing future leaders and strengthening civic understanding. He also serves as vice president of The Bridge Educational Philanthropy, a Jasper-based nonprofit focused on literacy and student support.
Taken together, those efforts paint a picture of someone who is not simply interested in personal success, but in creating opportunities for others, especially in the community that shaped him. 78
