Turkey Trot Virtual Run to Benefit Homeless Coalition
Beginning next week, runners will have a chance to participate in the Turkey Trot 5K and Fun Run for a good cause.
On Sunday, November 21 through Sunday, November 28, competitors will vie for first place in the annual benefit run. All proceeds will go toward the Walker County Coalition for the Homeless (WCCH).
The race was started several years ago but has grown into a Thanksgiving staple in the Jasper community.
Due to the virtual nature of this year’s event, runners can compete anywhere and submit their results to race coordinators. “No matter where you may be spending your Thanksgiving holiday, the virtual race gives everyone the opportunity to run or walk anywhere,” says board member Reed Pilling. “You've got 7 days to get it done—anywhere, anytime.”
The first 50 participants are guaranteed a T-shirt, which will be available the week after the race at the Walker County Homeless Coalition office at 640 19th Street West in Jasper. First, second and third place runners will also receive a prize.
“The Turkey Trot is vital to our fundraising,” says four-year board member Sarah O’Mary Roberts. “The last 2 years we've had to pivot because of Covid, but so far the community has stepped up. Hopefully this year will be no different!”
Roberts stresses that you don’t have to be a Walker County resident to participate and encourages out-of-towners to get in on the action.
WCCH Executive Director Cora Hankins says the fundraiser provides the critical support needed to help local families that are experiencing homelessness. “We envision that everyone in our community should have a place to live each day and have a chance to experience the joy that is often felt when coming home for the holidays. Housing stability is a gift that keeps giving throughout the year - will you help us trot to stop homelessness?”
