78 Featured Athletes: Marissa Lawson and Brayden Newton – Curry High

In this second installment of 78 Featured Athletes, we highlight Marissa Lawson and Brayden Nelson, both rising seniors at Curry High School.

Marissa Lawson 

Marissa Lawson played softball at Curry High School for coaches Dave Lawson and Jordan Dickerson. She played second and third base for the Yellow Jackets this past season. 

Marissa’s favorite subject in school is English and she plans to attend Shelton State Community College on a softball scholarship after graduating in 2022. She will pursue a degree in education and has dreams of one day becoming a softball coach. 

Her parents are Valerie and Shane Lawson.

Brayden Newton

Senior student-athlete Brayden Newton played linebacker for the Yellow Jacket football team and shooting guard for the basketball team this past season. This year, he will play for a new head football coach, DJ Emerson, who comes to Curry from Cordova High School. Brayden’s basketball coach is Jason Johnsey.

Brayden is the son of Erica and Darold Newton, and his favorite subject is math. He graduates in May 2022 and has plans to attend the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) to become a physical therapist. 

Congratulations to both of these student-athletes at Curry High School! 78
