High school students think about many things but starting their own business while still in high school doesn’t typically make that list. Recent Jasper High graduate Chase Turner didn’t just think about starting a business—he did it.
As a student at Jasper High School, Chase was involved in baseball, track, football, golf, and was a member of Beta Club. When Covid-19 abruptly halted normal school activities, Chase, who was a junior at the time, found himself with a little more time on his hands. Soon, the idea of starting a business came to mind.
“I have always thought about owning my own business,” Chase explains. “I figured if I start a business now and try to learn some of the skills early on, it would help me in my future.”
In the past, Chase had helped his dad with yard work and mowed a few yards here and there to make extra money. “I enjoy doing landscaping and lawn care so that is what I decided to do,” he says.
With the direction, support, and help of his parents, Stephanie and Will Turner, Chase moved forward with his bold plans. In April 2020, at only 18 years old, Chase became the proud owner of CT Lawn Care.
In the beginning, business was a little slow but that did not discourage Chase. He knew it would take some time to get going. “You just have to be patient,” he says.
Now, a little more than a year later, Chase mows around ten yards every other week and works one to two landscaping jobs a week. As work has picked up, he was able to add more equipment, which allowed him to expand his services.
Today, he can help clients with mowing, landscaping, pressure washing, and gutter cleaning.
Fresh off of graduation, Chase is preparing to begin his freshman year at Bevill State Community College, where he plans to study business. “I plan on still doing lawn care on the side,” he says, adding that his goal is to be able to expand the business and hire someone to help with the workload.
When asked why he decided to start a business at such a young age, Chase responds, “Some people are scared to venture out and try something new because they don’t know how it is going to end up. I just wanted to try something new…basically help me with my future on figuring out how to manage money better, give me better communication skills with people, and provide a good experience overall. If you want to do something you think you could do, then don’t be afraid to try.” 78
