For Reed Lum, attending The University of Alabama means more than just earning a degree; it’s building a tradition. His mother and father, Angie and George Lum, both received an education at UA and Reed is now following in their footsteps.
After graduating from Jasper High School in 2019, Reed set his sights on a career in engineering. He initially planned on attending the University of South Alabama but switched gears with only a week left before the application deadline.
To Reed, who grew up cheering for the crimson and white, the choice made perfect sense. Now shouting “Roll Tide!” holds an even deeper meaning. “Choosing UA was definitely the right choice for me,” Reed says. “Being able to get an education at the same university I’ve always loved and that my parents attended is special.”
Though Reed is still determining what exactly his profession will be, he believes pursuing a career in engineering is in his calling. For now, environmental engineering seems to be the most appealing option. Whatever the direction he chooses, he gives credit to his roots and the support system in place that helps him to navigate the difficult places of life.
“I feel like Jasper High and the University of Alabama have both prepared me so much for whatever I end up doing,” Reed explains. “My family play a huge part in keeping me pieced together too. If I ever feel overwhelmed by my classes or exams, my parents and grandparents are there to help however they can. I can always depend on them.”
Even though Reed is still in college, he has already racked up some crucial work experience. Part of his schooling occurred by working part-time and in the summers at Bernard’s Store for Men in Jasper, and he hopes to have more opportunities in the future.
“I would love to intern for Southern Company or to be on the coast working for an oil rig,” Reed says. “Right now, I’m also busy with my classes. Trying to learn thermodynamics online has been a challenge but I’m staying determined.”
Between his many classes, Reed has no issue keeping busy. However, he still makes time for his faith. “Church has always been important to me,” Reed says. “Recently, I’ve been attending First Baptist Church Tuscaloosa, which has been a lot of fun.”
Though attending The University of Alabama is becoming a tradition for the Lum family, there are more important pillars in their home: faith, purpose, and being there for one another. 78
